BIOGRAPHY :
Bob Kopecky began his aviation journey in 1960, earning his private pilot certificate through the Army ROTC program at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Commissioned as a second lieutenant, he served two years with the 82d Airborne Division before attending flight school at Fort Rucker, Alabama. After graduating, he stayed on as an instrument flight instructor and examiner. In 1965, Bob joined the Army Security Agency and flew radio reconnaissance missions in Vietnam, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and 22 Air Medals for 850 flight hours and 215 combat missions. He logged nearly 5,000 hours in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters during his Army career, receiving Master Army Aviator wings in 1979.
After Vietnam, Bob operated several large general aviation businesses in Oklahoma and Missouri, offering flight training, charter services, aircraft sales, and maintenance.
In 1989, he joined the FAA as an aviation safety inspector, where he developed airmen tests, training handbooks, and certification regulations. He retired in 2002 as the branch manager of Airmen Testing Standards.
Bob flew over 125 aircraft types, including airplanes, helicopters, seaplanes, gliders, and hot air balloons, amassing over 10,000 flight hours. His 50-year career in military and civilian aviation showcased his passion and dedication to the field, leaving a lasting legacy for family, friends, and colleagues.
