UNIVERSAL SAILOR WORK SHIRT - NAVY
DESCRIPTION
The story of the French sailor smock begins with its name. Vareuse comes from the old French verb varer, meaning “to protect” or “to shelter” a clear reference to its original purpose as a hard-wearing layer made for life at sea. Traditionally, sailors often made their own vareuse from leftover sailcloth: expensive but extremely durable fabric built to resist wind, salt, and daily friction. Over time, ports and maritime trades even developed their own signature colors, turning the vareuse into a true symbol of coastal identity.
Our version is a faithful reinterpretation of the traditional smock worn by French sailors. Originally crafted for life at sea, it has become an iconic piece of maritime clothing: simple, functional, and timeless, now considered a menswear essential.
Crafted from sturdy cotton canvas, it features a boxy, straight cut, an open collar, and a single chest pocket.
